So what do we know about humidification?

I'm always concerned about the humidity in the humidor. Is this the right humidity, am I placing my cigars in too soon?

Here's what I found out:

Humidors – Optimal Temperature and Humidity:

* Temperature:
o Keep the temperature between 60˚ and 70˚ Fahrenheit.
* Humidity:
o 70% is the ideal humidity. Between 65% and 75% humidity will work well too.

Humidors – Set Up and Proper Care

* Before storing your cigars, make sure to follow these steps:
o Wet a sponge with distilled water
o With the wet sponge, wipe down the cedar interior of your humidor.
o Make sure there is no standing water in your humidor
o Place the damp sponge on a piece of plastic and sit it at the bottom of the humidor
o Let the sponge sit for 24 hours.
o Check the sponge for moisture. If the sponge is dry, add more water and place in the humidor for another 24 hours.
o If the sponge is wet, this means that the cedar has absorbed all of the moisture that it needs.
o Check the humidity in your humidor using the hygrometer.
o Once the hygrometer gives you a reading of 70% humidity (+/- 5%), you are good to go.
o Store your cigars with confidence in your humidor.
o Check the humidity levels from time to time.
o When the humidity level dips below 65%, make sure to add more distilled water to the humidification device.

Well that clears things up for me!

Good article Damsel!!! If you would permit, I would like to expand on some of your points......

The hard and fast "rule" of a 70%humidity-70 degrees is an excellent guideline to remember. As with most aspects of cigars however this too is relative to your individual preferences. I prefer my humidity at 62-65% for aging and for smoking.....why? Its really a matter of taste, burn and draw. At lower humidities a cigar tends to burn and draw a little better then if they are kept in a "wetter" humidor. By the same token some people say a wetter cigar brings out a different flavor profile.....My point? As long as your cigars are tasting, drawing and burning as you like them, a few points of humidity isn't anything to call the pentagon about. 62%-70% is a range that keeps your sticks happy. You just have to find the number you prefer, that makes for the most pleasurable smoke for you.
As a side note....does anyone know, or want to know, where the 70-70 rule started?????
